1960 Ashley 1172 Coupe
Registration No. 58 RTD
Ashley 1172 coupe similar to Mike Entwisle's
Whilst checking the latest posts on a Facebook Group - Old British Cars in January 2021
I came upon a comment by Mike Entwisle about his
first car an Ashley.
I immediately commented back and asked a
few questions, as I do, and got this reply:
My first road car, an Ashley body on a Halifax tubular chassis, split front axle, coil overs, 1172 with an Aquaplane head and a high ratio axle. I paid £45 for it, drove it for a year and sold it for £50,
mind you I spent every weekend keeping it going!
You always remember the first car... Reg No. 58 RTD, 1172 engine.
I have a photo somewhere....
.Best I can do...
Well, I had to work on the photo a bit and also the Registration No, which came up a blank, but it was
listed as being registered by the
Lancaster County Council
in August 1960.
And the photo came up like this.

Photo's repaired & Coloured by I.C.
Which is a bit better on the old neck & eye's.
Mike came back to me saying;

The photo is glued to a collage of some of the cars I have owned, so I can’t do much with that, the nose was cut off in the photographic process.
The top was fixed, a creamy white gel coat, the rest painted red.
It was a Manchester or Salford car and these were registered at Preston, Lancashire. I think
Yes Ivor, use the details, not a problem.
I drove her in 1964/5 as daily transport and although it had a Halifax tubular chassis the split front axle continually broke the welds on the A frame and putting on the brakes, Girling rod pull, merely jacked up the front wheels.
The best braking could be obtained by slamming them on an allowing the nose weight to help the rod pulls! Lethal really.
I sold her to a fellow Salford Student, I replaced her by a 1934 MG!!

Many thanks Mike for your help in documenting
some of Ashley 1172 - 58 RTD's history.
